MY THOUGHTS....
I went to a crime scene on the 18th October
2008, involving my friend's factory. His factory was broken into and
all his CCTVs were dismantled. He lost more than 10 CCTV cameras
plus cash amounting to RM10,000. The burglars ransacked all the
drawers of his staff and carted away some laptop computers and
valuables.
I informed the police who were very helpful.
They assessed the crimework when they arrived at the scene, scoured
the area and asked other factory owners for help, many of whom were
willing to provide they CCTV coverage recordings, but to our dismay,
their cameras only recorded activities on their own premises and
therefore, we couldn't obtain much visual aid. We did have some
visuals provided by the neighbouring factory which showed only the
tops of the burglars' heads. The camera was positioned in such a way
that it failed to capture the face of the burglars. There were
some dummy cameras too.
From this experience, I hope that the owners
of factories and houses in the same area will recognize this mistake
and flaw in providing overall surveillance only for their own
premises. We should install the CCTV cameras in such a way that
there is at least one camera to cover the area that includes front
and rear entrances of our neighbours' premises as well. The logic
behind this move is that the burglars won't have enough time or find
it worthwhile to vandalize all the CCTVs in the entire area and it
will be prove to be a very big help to the police in their
investigation work.
I really hope to get this message across so
that we will have a better crime prevention strategy and also hope
that those who are going to install CCTV cameras will look into this
aspect.
