QUESTION:
I have never been to the place but I receive a traffic summons notice through the mail. What should I do?

ANSWER:
You can write an appeal letter to the various Ketua Trafik Daerah and explain your case. You can also ask for proof of your offence by requesting the photograph of the alleged offence. You will need to get a postal order amounting to RM10.00 payable to Ketua Polis Daerah and they will send you a copy of the photo taken of the alleged incident. If you found evidence that someone misused your car registration number, you must submit all the relevant documents to the police and ask them to cancel the summons notice.

QUESTION:
I bought a second-hand car. Upon checking, I noticed that there are many traffic summonses still outstanding. What can I do?

ANSWER:
Show proof of ownership transfer. The police will go after the previous registered owner. My advice to those wanting to purchase a second-hand vehicle is to check for previous unpaid summonses and ask the agent or the owner to settle them before transferring the ownership to the intended buyer.

QUESTION:
I sold my car to a second-hand car dealer. After some time, I discovered that summonses are still being issued under my name even though the vehicle is in the custody of the dealer.

ANSWER:
Many dealers do not immediately transfer the ownership and they may wait for a buyer before doing it. In the meantime, they may rent out or use the said vehicle which resulted in you receiving summonses. My advice to you is to make sure that the transfer of ownership is done on the spot as and when you dispose of your vehicle to the dealer. Ask for proof of transfer. All your appeals for summonses and arguments on this matter will be purely based on your registration card and not on other documents pertaining to the sales and purchase between you and the buyer.

All appeals of traffic summons cases can be done at the Traffic Counter located at the front gate of Bukit Aman or by meeting with the Compound Officer Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. You can also call Bukit Aman at +603-22626222 for further information.

For summonses issued under the respective districts, they can go to the respective districts to pay their summonses.

There are many cases of snatch thefts around town. Snatch thieves normally strike when the opportunity arises, so to avoid being a victim, one has to reduce the opportunity for snatch thieves to strike. Sound advice include:

1.  Walk against the traffic flow

2.  Keep your belongings on the safe side of the road to reduce the
chances for snatch thieves to have an easy target.

3.  Do not flash your purse or wallet especially when patronising roadside
stalls. The snatch thief/thieves may be watching what you have in your
     wallet/purse.

4.  Avoid carrying to many belongings at one time to avoid being a
possible soft target for snatch thieves

5.  Avoid wearing flashy jewelry

6.  Avoid carrying too much cash

7.  Wind up your car windows and lock all your car doors, especially
while stopping at the traffic lights.

8.  Bring along a companion when withdrawing large amounts of cash
from the bank and/or the ATM machine.
